Privacy policy
Leashless is a free guide to off-leash dog areas in British Columbia, run by Leashless. We collect as little personal information as we can. This page explains what we do collect, why, and what you can ask us to do with it. It's written with British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and Canada's PIPEDA in mind.
The short version
- You can use the whole site without an account and without telling us who you are.
- "Near me" uses your location inside your own browser. It is never sent to us or stored.
- We don't sell personal information.
- We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used. Details below.
- If you send us a suggestion or email us, we use what you send to review and improve the guide.
What we collect
When you browse
Like every website, our hosting provider receives standard technical information when your browser requests a page: your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time. This is used to deliver the site and keep it secure, and is kept only as long as the provider's logs are kept.
Maps are drawn from map tiles provided by OpenFreeMap, so when a map loads, your browser requests those tiles and OpenFreeMap receives your IP address and the map area you're viewing. Fonts, photos and video are served from our own site.
"Near me"
If you tap Near me, your browser asks for permission to share your location. If you allow it, your location is used on your device to sort parks by distance and centre the map. It isn't sent to us or saved. The map may then load tiles for your area, as above.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to see which pages are used, which features help (for example, how often people tap Directions), and roughly where visitors come from. Google Analytics uses cookies and receives your IP address, device and browser details. We don't use it to identify you, and we don't combine it with other information. Google's advertising features (Google signals and ad personalisation) are switched off, so it isn't used to build advertising profiles. You can block it with the Google Analytics opt-out add-on or your browser's privacy settings. See Google's privacy policy.
Suggestions and new places
Our "Suggest an update" and "Add a missing place" forms are run by Tally (being set up). We receive what you enter: details about a park or venue, an optional photo, and your email address only if you choose to give it. Please don't include other people's personal information, and don't send photos that show people's faces. Tally stores submissions on its own servers; see Tally's privacy policy.
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write, and use it only to reply and act on it.
Why we use it
- To run the site and keep it working and secure.
- To check suggestions and add or correct listings.
- To reply to you, if you asked us to.
- To understand how the guide is used and improve it.
We only use information for these purposes, or as the law requires.
Who else handles it
We rely on a few service providers: our web host, OpenFreeMap for map tiles, Tally for forms, and Google for analytics. Some of them store or process information outside Canada, including in the United States and the European Union, where it may be subject to local laws. We don't sell or rent personal information to anyone.
If you send a suggestion with a photo and tell us we may publish it, the photo may appear on the site with the credit you ask for. We review every submission before anything is published.
The share buttons (WhatsApp, text, email, Facebook) are plain links. Nothing is sent to those services, and none of their code loads on our pages, unless you tap one; then that service's own privacy policy applies.
How long we keep it
We keep suggestions only as long as needed to review them and maintain the listing, and emails only as long as the conversation needs. Ask us and we'll delete your email address or submission sooner.
Your choices and rights
You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, correct it, or have it deleted, and you can withdraw consent at any time. Email hello@leashless.ca and we'll respond within 30 days.
If you're not satisfied with our answer, you can contact theOffice of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia or theOffice of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Children
The site is meant for adults planning outings with their dogs. We don't knowingly collect information from children.
Changes
If we change how we handle information, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
